Purvis Young Paintings Donated to Morehouse

The Wynwood-based Rubell Family Collection has donated a collection of Purvis Young paintings valued at more than $1 million to Morehouse College in Atlanta. According to the college, it's the largest, single collection of art donated to Morehouse.
The collection features 109 paintings by the Liberty City-born artist whose work depicts the social impact of poverty, crime, and displacement of his surroundings. Young gathers many of the objects he uses in his artwork from his Overtown neighborhood, one of the most impoverished in Miami.
In 2000, the Rubell Family Collection purchased the contents of Young's studio, which contained work from 1985-1999, with the aim of cataloging and donating the work to public U.S. institutions.
