In Untitled (Carrying the Angel to the Hanging Tree), Young explores a recurring theme of his work: the legacy of violence against African American communities. The somber funeral march of a haloed angelic figure moving toward a hanging tree serves as its own human timeline – from left to right, historical lynchings to the contemporary injustices of now. The approach of a new millennium found Young in full command of his expression. What appeared minimal at first glance was in reality the zenith of refinement. Here, color spectrum, sculptural components and the abstract stand alongside narrative, inviting us to do likewise – bearing witness to the profane and the angelic.
