Coconut Grove is one of the largest neighborhoods in Miami and the city’s first black settlement. It features many shotgun houses, which are narrow, rectangular, one-story homes built by Bahamian immigrants who have lived in the area for over 140 years. Prevalent through much of the South, Young would have been familiar with the architectural style in both urban and country settings. Within the artist’s customary framework, he has chosen to utilize a unique version of green in a seeming nod to a more natural pristine setting, though hardly bucolic given the frenzied figures inhabiting the home. This rare large painting on Arches paper was obtained directly from the artist and is signed by the artist in the upper right hand corner.
