Featured in the catalog “Purvis Young: Possession”, Untitled, ( Loa Possessed) explores the world of Haitian Voodoo within the African diaspora. Loa traditionally serve as an intermediary between humanity and Bondye, a transcendent creator divinity, and here, Young has captured this divine moment of possession at full volume. The presence of the divine is captured by brushstroke and both horse and rider, possessed, are clearly connected to a power far greater than themselves. Young has masterfully incorporated structural cutouts on the right side to provide a visual tension and from top to bottom, the painting is a masterpiece of elevated inner experience. Acquired directly from the artist, the art work is signed upper right.
