It’s the same no matter the game. This is the human drama of sport and life – to get the check you have to get the ball. And in Young’s mid 90’s tour de force Untitled (Football), the artist portrays a make or break moment on the field of play that resonates for us all. Young’s brushwork moves to the forefront here – the figures appear multidimensional via different colored layers of paint and the sense of movement is tangible. Additionally, an understated sculptural frame with simple depictions of footballs extends the visual field of the work and provides a sideline for the artist’s colorful energy and bright imagery. The following year would find Young’s work exhibited as part of the 1996 Cultural Olympiad in Atlanta – garnering the attention of museums and institutions. This would prove to be the artist’s own victorious moment – leading to unparalleled success and worldwide acclaim.
