In art as in life, we witness the unbearable lightness of being. In this powerful minimally chromatic masterpiece from the mid 1980’s, Young brings his love of mixed media to found materials in perfect symbiosis. The artist’s studio at this time, located next to his spiritual advisor Silo Crespo’s home, was small in comparison to his later studio and limited Young’s ability to create larger works. This resulting smaller scale creation is a stellar study in restraint when compared with later works from larger studio space. Inked figures and dark stars populate the cabinet door surface as a procession and celebration of life is positioned slightly off center. The figures flow in a circular motion and seem transparent – all structurally outlined in ink and a select number filled with opaque colored marker. The cabinet door retains its’ original hardware at the center and is hand framed as well. And in a discrete and tender homage to his mother, Young has included what appears to be random numbers scattered like stars but were instead gambling numbers his mother had him play for her as a youth.
