Born prior to the Japanese surrender of World War II, Young maintained a strong interest in warrior history throughout his life. In Untitled (Tora! Tora! Tora! Three Zeros), the artist shifts his gaze from the streets to sky as three Japanese planes fly in formation towards battle. The atmosphere of the painting seems electric with conflict and on close view, Young’s brushwork surrounds the developing narrative with asymmetric energy and movement – the intangible becomes visible and infuses the battle with futility and a certain conclusion – that while noble, is unaccompanied by celebration. The painting, acquired directly from the artist, was prominently featured in “Paintings From The Street”, Young’s 2006 retrospective at the Boca Raton Museum of Art and is signed upper right.
